He says he saw it at about 150 yards walking in with his friend who was spotting for him with binos. He aimed high on the shoulder with a 25-06 and shot. The buck fell instantly and rolled on its bak with all 4 legs in the air then lay there motionless for about 5 min before they decided to approach. When they got within 50 yrds it jumped up and ran 15 yrds and disappeared under the fence. They never found blood and they searched for him for 5 hours and again this am but never foudn any sign of him. No buzzards either.

I trust this guy is telling me the truth and by his voice he is really upset about the whole thing.

What do yall think happened to this buck?

For me it is typial to wait 30 min then approah him with a chambered gun. For my buddy 5 min and a loaded but non chambered gun was sufficent, or so he thought.

I asked him the same question.

He was expecting the bullet to drop slightly and was hoping to spine him since he was so close tot he fence. he didnt want to hit him and have him run off with a lung shot crossing in the fence.

My thought was then why didnt you aim for the neck?

Well after the apparently shot buck left the scene and went under the fence, by buddy got premission to look for his buck but prior to that we did not have authority.

This has happened at our lodge a couple years back. If a deer does this, always shoot him again cuz he ain't dead.

Could have hit high or low. Close to the spine will cause a "shock" to his neuro system and will "stun" him. Kind of like getting a stinger in football. If he was a little high he should have found a LOT of hair at the spot he shot him.

Tell him if he would have left his wife's gun at home he would have probably had a big enough wound channel to hit something of importance and he wouldn't be having this problem. That or he could just know enough to realize that if he aims at solid shoulder he falls within site of the fence if not right there.

Really, the guy sounds like a dumbass.

The problem??

He shot with a 25-06!!!

Every person I know who has lost a great buck, shot it with a 25-06.

EVERYONE!! Learn from this!!!

Shot placement > caliber type.

I agree. BUT big caliber=makes close count.

Believe me, when your shooting at a 150 inch deer and you make a borderline shot you'll be glad you had a larger caliber. If this guy is shooting a 300 he's taking pictures this evening.

Why use a ball-peen hammer when you have a sledgehammer?

I guess I am just of the school of thought that slightly quartering toward + shot placement right in the breadbasket is the way to go. I have a complex about just wounding a whitetail...
