4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days is excellent. I think it was third best movie I saw in the aughts. The photography was indeed beautiful. Even the handheld would stop following its subject when it got too mobile. It reminded me of what Emmanuel Lubezki did in Y Tu Mama Tambien, which he calls "posed naturalism," combining the grit of guerrilla filmmaking with traditional compositions.

If you like that, I recommend The Class (available on Instant), which was the Palm d'Or winner the following year as 4 Months. Very different subject matter but an approach that is equally hands off and raw.

And for you sicko Serbian Film/Centipede fans, Fruit Chan's Dumplings was added to Instant. It's a better film with a good leading performance so you can get your nutriton too. About an out of work TV actress who uses a diet of dumplings with a super secret ingredient to appear younger.
