If you win on an untimed play there is no need to kick, just like overtime

Not exactly. If the point differential is 1 or 2, then, as a poster above said, the rule requires a try, because it is possible for the defensive team to block the try (or a snap is fumbled, or whatever) and if the defensive team gets the ball and carries it to the opposite end zone, they score 2 points and can win or tie the game. It was only because the Tennessee team had left the field that the refs opted not to enforce the rule.
