I kept wondering during Saturday's game why our defense wasn't dropping DE's into coverage to take away some of the short slants that UNC was converting at will. Marcus Spears used to drop into coverage quite a bit and picked off several passes. I remember him doing that in the NC game against OU. Anyway, it just seemed obvious to me that if we dropped our DE's into coverage and blitzed our inside corner, it would have been effective against those short slants. Anyone else have that thought?

yeah I wondered why we didn't try that seeing as how zone blitzing is what Chavis likes to do.

on Mathieu's sack/ fumble, what was the d-line doing? haven't seen the replay.

Not sure. That's a good question. I have the game DVR'd, so I'm going to watch that play again. I kept yelling at the tv, "Drop a DE into coverage and you'll get a pick!" during UNC's long 4th quarter drive. As usual, nobody was listening... except my wife... and she doesn't coach for LSU.

With the height and speed of Mingo, Monty, and the others, was calling for the same. I did notice the chief went generic at the beginning of the 4th qtr, bit thought that was due go the number of true Frosh. being played.

blitzing a corner and dropping the DE into coverage is called a zone blitz. its a big risk-reward scenario. It is a different look and can be very effective if the ball is thrown into the DE's area. It also leaves a big open area vacated by the blitzing corner.
