something that irks me

BP does not stand for british petroleum. it did at one time, but that time is now now. The full company name is BP Global. there is no mention of "british petroleum" on its website. they like to bill themselves as beyond petroleum, but even that is not what BP stands for. so stop calling it british petroleum.
also, it is not owned or operating by britian or england.

The company was founded in 1889 and is headquartered in London, the United Kingdom.

Queen of England is a major shareholder. I'm pretty sure she's British.

yes, operated, not operating. it is based out of england, but certainly not run/operated/owned by the english government. the queen may own stock, but then again i have a 401k that quite possibly owns stock in BP, but i wouldnt say i own BP.

No shite it's not owned by the British government, it's a publicly traded company.
