This season Gary perfected the art of giving away his play by his formation. Let’s go over a few of them.
1. Russell Shepard in the Wild Cat = 100% run.
Everyone was waiting all year for Shepard to fake run and throw a pass to a wide open receiver for a TD. While other teams have receivers and running backs throwing these passes, Gary refuses to let a Quarterback throw this pass.
2. I Form – Tight end in motion to the left = 100% run to the left.
This one reminds me of Super Tecmo Bowl where you had 8 plays with 2-4 formations to choose from. The computer in 1990 was smart enough to have a pass and a run option with a formation with motion so it would keep the defense guessing. Some guys would choose to switch up the playbook and leave a play exposed with only one option. If I still played that game today, I would call those guys Gary Crowton.
3. Any time we have a fullback in, especially if he is in motion, we are going to run.
We don’t run that much and when we do, not only do we give it away, but they normally even give away what side they are running to. I won’t even break down the option to the short side because it disgusts me to think about it. But running it when Jefferson has a bad ankle and also with Jarrett Lee is borderline madness.
Mix in that we just now started throwing to Tolliver in his Junior year after he was the #1 recruit in the nation as a wide out and we almost never play Randle or Shepard. I think he has done more than enough to end his stint at LSU.
