Pelini Calls Out Defense After 49-3 Win

After thrashing Florida Atlantic 49-3, Pelini blasted his defense in front of reporters. Calling his defense "soft," Pelini also said two of the Cornhuskers' best players were "average at best" in the game.
I would not want to be a defensive player for Nebraska this week.

Miles thinks "he'll get that fixed, not a big deal"

You guys must have been passed out for Pelini's first defensive showing at LSU.

Kind of like his schemes?

No, it was terrible.
Doesn't mean I don't like his intensity over Les's bullshite.

Yea, I didn't like the Arizona State game. But you know what? He fixed it. The very next week. And we went on to have one of the best defenses in the country over the next three years.
Will Chavis do the same? We shall see. We, along with the rest of the college football country, will be watching starting Saturday at Vandy.

I actually am not too fond of this move. I think its pretty disrespectful to Florida Atlantic. I understand that they gave up a lot of yards, but if you beat a team by 46 and are unhappy about it, perhaps you shouldn't schedule that team in the first place.

Being Florida Atlantic is disrespectful to Florida Atlantic

Not really sure if you mean my attitude or Pelini's. If you mean mine, then schedule more aggressively and you won't have to whine about your 46 points victory.

exactly and maybe the players would be more motivated to play against a more solid opponent in the opening game.

I don't understand what your point is. Pelini was talking about how he was not happy with the way his defense played against Florida Atlantic. What does that fact have to do with this statement by you:
Does not make sense to me.

Alright, I'll break it down for you. I don't care what Pelini says to his team behind closed doors - if he thought they should have won by 80 and wants to tell that to them, be my guest. If he thinks the defense should have held them to 200 yards of total offense - okay. But when he "gave his defense a verbal flogging in front of reporters", I think he made a classless decision. Look, just say "there are some things we could have done better" or at most "I would have liked to have seen a little tighter coverage". At least in public. My point is, don't beat up on some team, and then complain about your defense's performance. If after demolishing an inferior opponent he couldn't show a little respect, then he doesn't need to play that quality of opponent. You want to talk about something wrong with sports? Talk about scheduling competitive games for fans to enjoy.

Where was that attitude at when he at LSU and the D was giving up chunks of yardage to Tebow and co.

We must have been watching 2 different teams those last couple years.

If you think Pelini did not ride the arse of the LSU defense while he was here then you know very little. As for giving up "chunks of yardage to Tebow" when he was here, he really only led the LSU defense against Tebow once, in 2007. LSU beat Florida in that game and held Tebow and the Gator offense to 24 points...which is less than we held the Washington Husky offense. In 2006, when Florida was led primarily by Chris Leak and won the national championship, the LSU defense held the Gator offense to 23 points in the Swamp. Again, less than we held Washington.
So I think there is something to think about.

Are you referring to the 2007 season, the last year Pelini was here? The year where we won the national championship? The year when our SEC defense ranking was:
rushing defense: 2nd
passing defense: 4th
total defense: 1st
scoring defense: 2nd
How soon you forget?

quote:for you, maybe, but not for me. I know more about LSU football then you'll ever know, and the only thing that held Fla. to 24 points that nite was LSU's offense with Flynn, by keeping the ball out of Tebow and co. hands, the defense did not stop them one time that nite, and if not for them running out of time at the end, they were surely driving down the field again to retake the lead and probably the game.
So I think there is something to think about.
besides, you can point out Kentucky that year or Arkansas, Pelini's defense was overrated.
