Summers was appointed Under Secretary for International Affairs of the United States Department of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton's administration. In 1995, he was promoted to Deputy Secretary of the Treasury under his long-time political mentor Robert Rubin. In 1999, he succeeded Rubin as Secretary of the Treasury.

Former Harvard University President Larry Summers has resigned from teaching following a review of his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, a university spokesman confirmed Wednesday.
“In connection with the ongoing review by the University of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently released by the government, Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy Weinstein has accepted Professor Lawrence H. Summers’ resignation from his leadership position as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government,” Harvard spokesman Jason Newton said in a statement.

The problem with these "reviews" is that they don't really tell you what the issue actually is. The guy hosted parties. People went. Just being in the same room with the guy doesn't make you guilty of anything.
Harvard has wanted to can Summers ever since they effectively canceled from the President's position. He was a tenured member of the faculty, so they couldn't fire him for the crime of wrong think. So he's been on faculty another decade or so.
Now he has resigned; still not fired. Is there something criminal in there or did the administration threaten him with a public lynching if he didn't leave voluntarily? Knowing what I know of the Academy, the latter is highly likely.

The emails revealed years of correspondence between Summers and Epstein, in which Summers, a former U.S. Treasury Secretary, made sexist comments and sought Epstein’s romantic advice, The Associated Press reported.
Summers reportedly maintained a friendly relationship with Epstein long after the financier pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl in 2008, according to reports.
