Playing Gen I-III Pokémon games on handheld devices

My 6 year old has started to show interest in Pokémon. I am no longer a gamer, but had a GBC, GBA and SP when they came out. Some of my fondest memories were playing the Gen I-III games and was going to get something for nostalgia. I am looking at hand held options and can’t tell what is Chinese trash or not.
Any recommendations from the board? I may get one for myself too

i have seen a few of these types of things advertised on isnta.
Seem very cool. always wanted to know if they actually worked.
Dont some come with games pre loaded on them?
Battery life, screen, buttons, audio all work well?
No issues with save files?
Is there a way to transfer pokemon between 2 devices?
do you have to be smart to add new games?

You can buy the option SD cards with games loaded and it will work for most people, but it does have a lot of duplicate games. You can always get their pre-loaded SD and just try your own SD/rom sets later.
It’s pretty easy to get your own SD card, look up a tutorial on YouTube on how to download and install “onionOS”, then google “tiny best set” for a really good rom set.
