: "On the Silver Globe" is a 1988 Polish epic surrealist science fiction film directed and written by Andrzej Zulawski, adapting his grand-uncle Jerzy's novel. The film's plot involves a team of astronauts who crash-land on an uninhabited planet (not the Moon, unlike the book, due to scientific advances between the book's and film's creation dates) and form a new society. Years later, a single astronaut is sent to the planet and is hailed as a messiah by the descendants, who are now partially feral and view the "Old Man" (the last remaining original astronaut) as a demigod. The film explores themes of societal collapse, the cyclical nature of human civilization, religious belief, and the dark side of humanity.
