I'm sorry if this was mentioned in the 20-something page thread on the game, but what were your impressions of the students tonight?

It was my first LSU basketball game, and I was glad to find that people in the Maravich Maniac seats are as annoyingly passionate as I am. There was a lack of organization sometimes...but for a very small and unorganized group, I didn't think it was bad. I come from a high school that won 3 state championships during my 4 years, so I might be biased.

Was it pretty packed, relatively speaking? Was it loud? Can I expect better?

I was down in the Maniacs section. Fun times, but like you said, its just too small and we're completely isolated from the rest of the students in the upper decks. You probably saw the entire SS was filled and once again had to be extended into some of the extra seats in the corner.

As far as loudness is concerned, when we started draining threes and the place virtually erupted, thats the loudest I've heard it since the 05-06 season. Unfortunately thats about as far back as I can go in watching LSU BB games. I'm a youngin.

I'm a paying season ticket holder, not a student, and have to say that LSU administration has totally dropped the ball on the LSU student section.

The group near the court is great, but 80% of the student section is "outside of the game". Their is no continuity to the current layout of the student section, and it takes away from their impact on the game. The student section, much like football, creates the atmosphere in the arena. The atmosphere/noise was much better in the past when the whole student section was grouped together. Hopefully Joe Alleva recognizes this and will move the students back to the old configuration or move them all behind a goal.

Thank Skip Bertman's greedy arse for the way the student section is situated. He was worried about the money making seats not the students.

Way to assume there champ. Or could it be that student section attendance over the past years has been horrible and he didn't want so many empty seats close to the court?

The court level seats weren't the ones taken from the students, except for one section. The 200 level seats (except for the section behind the band and the adjacent section towards midcourt) were annexed, and the 300 level seats were shifted and strung out around the top behind the goal.

It looks stupid, it's ineffective in terms of generating atmosphere, and the paying sections in the 200 level behind the lower level section being half empty make it look even worse. Thankfully the students are on the near side of the court in relation to the TV cameras, so if those sections are sporadically filled again come Saturday it won't be quite as much of an embarrasment to the university on a nationally televised game.

There is no continuity and the seating for students is horrible. But it's predicated upon the years when barely any students showed up the last few years. I would love for the entire section to be moved behind the goal and up to the rafters and shift those season tickets holders over accordingly. I don't think it's possible to do it this year because the tickets have been sold so we're stuck with this arrangement but a change for next year would be nice.

there is a push for the student section to become more organized....
a guy working in basketball's front office has a group of students and they are making the maravich maniacs an official club at LSU
the whole purpose is to make the student section better and better organize it for all sports (not needed for football)...
if you were sitting in the "pit" (as i like to call it) there were cheer sheets that were passed around. this was the first game we attempted it so it was still a little unorganized, but its a step in the right direction

im excited about it

The arena could be more fan friendly in terms of getting closer to the court as well. The one thing that we have in our pocket is an AD that was at the premier basketball school in regard to student section attendance and location. Alleva knows the benefit of that type of environment for a program and I think he is merely waiting until we actually win to implement the necessary changes.
