Jasmine

Yeah we have a single confederate jasmine plant that forms a huge hedge along the top of our fence to block the view into our breakfast area. I extended the height of the fence with a trellis. It would just keep growing and mound over itself if I let it. Ours is in the ground though so no idea how constraining the root system in a planter would affect the growth. Maybe just get a big planter, or take up a couple of pavers that are where it would go.

won't drop foliage into my pool

After it blooms it drops the flowers, but it’s not too bad if it’s not overhanging or right on the edge or your pool. As someone else said, take a hedge trimmer to it after the blooms pass and forget about it until the next year. Be sure to cut it back some though because it will grow out over the rest of the summer and then the following spring.

would be difficult since i have brick columns in between panels and it would not look right having the wood higher than the columns. I like the idea bt in this situation it wont work

Not with confederate jasmine because it will cover the lattice, and you can keep it trimmed away from the fence boards below. I’ll try to remember to take a pic of mine tomorrow because that’s how I keep mine trained and trimmed.
