Gap year might be okay, but he probably won’t know what he wants to be even after that.
That’s what college is for especially the first two years. Take survey courses and move in a particular direction.
If he doesn’t attend college and goes the trade route, what then? He’ll be forced to pick a singular career at 19/20 instead of getting a wide ranging education that can prepare him for any number of fields.
Obviously ensure he’s focusing on degrees that lead to jobs and good salaries.
