If Grant had stepped into command Napoleon's Grand Armee after dying unexpectedly in 1806 you might have a point. However, the Army of the Tennessee's was Grant's baby from late-1861 until the end of 1863. He trained and developed that army and led it to an undefeated record from the Battle of Belmont in November 1861 to the Battle of Chattanooga in November 1863.
