It is threads like this that make me think Europe really does a much better job when it comes to employing people

Correct, FMLA protects the employment of someone needing a short term medical leave. It is not paid, although many employers will pay a portion of it. Our policy is basically set up to get someone to be covered under disability. We will protect your job for three months, but after that you will have to apply for LTD.
