From 1941 to about 1975, if you were a young man and didn't have a physical or mental disability, you were going to get acquainted with the military in some form or another, whether you wanted to or not.

We've since had a couple of generations where most people don't have military experience and don't know anyone else who does. Some of them are fascinated by it want to pretend they're part of it without making any of the sacrifices. They get to do the fun stuff without doing any of the hard stuff. And this IS the fun stuff, at least when you look back on it after it's over. The hard stuff is when you're lonely, bored, scared, have relationship problems, have money problems, see your civilian friends moving on with their lives and know you have several more years of it.
