GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Wednesday, Mar 27th 2024
Court documents reveal an illegal Mexican immigrant charged with the murder of Ruby Garcia had several run-ins with police before he was deported in 2020.
Ortiz-Vite has a criminal record that dates back to 2017 in Grand Rapids, when he was cited for driving without a license, or on a license that wasn’t valid.
Six months later, Ortiz-Vite was arrested and charged with illegal entry into a residence in Wyoming, court records show.
Ortiz-Vite remained in the country for three more years following the incidents.
Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert says deportation is a lengthy process.
“I have dealt with cases before, where they are in the process of being deported, and you have other things that actually stand in the way of deportation," Gilbert said.
Ortiz-Vite was removed from the country in 2020, following a drunk driving arrest in Grand Rapids in 2020
