I was caught with pot my senior year in HS and I'll never forget the conversation my dad had with me. Sat me down, said he wasn't mad and I'm not in trouble, but explained to me why it was dumb to have it in my car, etc. He was honest and said things like "weed isn't going to kill you and I know you're going to college next year..." etc. but just spoke to me being smarter. And said this time I won't do anything, but next time he finds that in his house or in the car he bought for me there will be serious consequences.

Talked to me like an adult and I took the conversation to heart.

Then my mom yelled at me like a banshee and I remember thinking about how differently they approached the situation and how much more impactful my dad was.

Sounds like my dad. He started the conversation by saying, "don't tell your mom I said this and if you tell her I'll deny it" and then told me that it was fine to smoke a little weed, but keep it after work/school and on the weekends and to always have my bills paid before buying any. It was a much longer talk but that was the jist of it.
