I saw an interview on YouTube with Joe Buck and Namath where he said he said he was called the N-word at Alabama because he had black friends in his personal life.
And he wanted to leave his freshman year. He didn't know the SEC was segregated and didn't have the best players.
Said he wanted to go to Notre Dame or Maryland but couldn't get in because of low test scores.
The Maryland coach told him to contact Bear Bryant, he'll take anyone who can ball (as long as you aren't black). So that's how Namath ended up at Alabama.
