Exactly. 75 years ago we had a need and decided that an interstate system was a better idea than a rail system. What is the need now? What does highspeed rail get you that cars/planes do not? I am not diametrically opposed to rail but without an entirely additional network of subways/local light rail in dozens and eventually hundreds of cities, what did you accomplish?

What you ARE left with is tremendous maintenance and operational costs for the existing interstate system, airports, AND now high speed rail lines.
