Well pretty much all the dudes from 2021 are gone… Ojulari, Gaye, Baskerville, etc.

This is what the O defenders and mouth-breathers don't understand.

The current staff inherited 25 scholarship defensive players from the prior staff.

6/7 were building blocks for the 2022 defense depending on how you feel about Major Burns (Ojulari,Smith, Roy, Gaye, Baskerville, Ward and Burns).

4 were developing players/rotational players (Guillory, Mike Jones, Penn and Ryan).

the other 14 were cannon fodder and Nudie McGlothern.

Only 2 of the building blocks and 3 of the developing/rotational players were still at LSU in 2023 with 2 of the cannon fodder remaining also (Langston and Langlois).

7 of 25 inherited players remain at LSU for the 2023 season.

Only having 25 in the pipeline is a failure by the prior coaching staff; and only having 11 (10 and Mikes Jones, Jr.) functional players out of that 25 is a major failing by the prior coaching staff. Having McGlothern as the only viable CB is a major failure by the previous coaching staff. Only having Baskerville and Penn at LB as viable players is a major failure by the previous coaching staff. Only having Guillory as a developing player at DL is a failure by the prior coaching staff.

Hence, the necessity of the strong usage of the portal in years 1 and 2 by the current coaching staff. And people wonder why year 2 of the defense is worse than year 1 under Kelly and House.

This makes sense. Next year will probably be very difficult.
