I don't recall if this is 100% accurate, but I seem to vaguely recall that a pretty reasonable deal was offered... something like 10 years. Or trial and face mandatory minimum life for the specific charge she had. She gambled thinking her "i was drugged" defense would work and lost.

Tough call if you feel you're truly innocent, but given the outrage at the time, she was probably facing a stacked deck.
