How cool is southern Appalachia during summer? I have only been during fall and winter TBH.
We have a place out in Bat Cave North Carolina, near Hendersonville / Lake Lure / Asheville. It gets warm out there, but would feel like a dream compared to 100 degree days. Average June-August temps have highs in the mid-low 80's with lows in the 60's. You'll get a couple of days that creep into the 90's, but they don't last long.

I’d check out smaller lakes in Michigan, ie Burt lake, Torch lake, Huggins Lake, Douglas Lake, Crooked lake, Gull lake, Glen lake or go to the UP around Marquette. I would say the best town to summer vacation in Michigan would be traverse city.
