You would be amazed at the amount of people with medical collections filling up their credit reports
I have been out of the business for a very long time, but yes, there was some kind of medical collection on just about every credit report I pulled for mortgage refis. At the time, underwriting wouldn't hold that against them on the DTI. A judgement, however, which is when a collector sues you and wins, and then reports that judgement, that absolutely gets held against you, because with a judgement the collector can actually put liens on your property , house, car, boat, anything with a title.
The guy above that got served papers and didn't show up would have a default judgement against him for not showing up or otherwise contacting the clerk for other arrangments. Whether or not that collector ever actually reported that judgement to the credit reporting agencies is another matter. But when you get served by the sheriff with a suit, one should not simply throw them in the trash. As I said before, judgements follow you forever, they don't get forgiven or drop off your credit report after X years.
