I'm with you, learning to play late in life as a bucket list mission. I'd start on electric since it's easier to play. Get a cheap amp and don't worry about how clean or full it sounds. You can upgrade once you get better.

As for guitar recommendations... I'm a Fender guy so I'd recommend buying a Squier Classic Vibe. I've bought two (strat and Jazzmaster) and both were playable right our of the box. This website sells new overstock as "used" at $150-200 less than new.

As others have mentioned, start with chords and use YouTube tutorials. Commit to playing for a few minutes every day and eventually it will become second nature and you'll see progress over time. Hope it works for you brother!
