I’d argue that it has become a new religion in and of itself.
I was just watching a Christian show this morning showing how when you stop trusting in God, or keeping Him center in your life, something else will inevitably take its place as your new religion. This seems to validate that point perfectly, and it would explain why everything becomes a religion these days, and there are many of them, complete with their own following, dogma, and hierarchy people look to.
