Some of that is because the funeral home acts like a loan shark for insurance premiums. The expend the money for a casket, their services, cards, etc. They file for the death certificate and then file for life insurance policy. Once they collect the money from the life insurance company, they send you a check for what is left from the proceeds of the insurance payout.
In most cases, they will not pay for a burial plot. For that some cemetaries want cash in hand before burial.
On a side point, I received a letter last week concerning a life insurance policy my dad had with life insurance company that went belly up and was absorbed by a larger company. Crazy thing is that he has been deceased for 7 years now, did the funeral home screw up and miss a policy that he had.
