I help high school kids apply for scholarships and grants to help reduce the cost of college. I have been doing this for almost 30 years and have never had a student pay full price. It requires a little work but can be done.

Do you discourage student loans unless absolutely necessary? Do you help them calculate total payout over the life of the loan vs the amount borrowed? I know nothing about it but have read that even after 10 years of payments the principle is reduced very little. I don't know how the payment schedule works or when it starts or even how the monthly payments are calculated. Some of it seems almost predatory but, the kid signed the deal and someone with some experience in the matter should help these kids avoid disaster. But....they still owe the money.
