His mistake was putting Merrifield at second instead of the faster Kling

That was something else I noticed. I get that they were on 1st and 2nd when they went in, and you want the faster Kling to be able to score on a double. But when it happened that it was Merrifield at 3rd, just don’t do it. He had zero chance. A team like Wake Forest practices that situation. We weren’t gonna catch them off guard, they weren’t gonna panic, and they were gonna make a good throw and get our guy by 10 feet. Because they are really well coached and practice the little things like that. That play is for high school’s who don’t practice it and are more likely to either be totally caught off guard or freak out and make a terrible throw. Unless you have a super fast runner on 3rd. We did it in college because we had a guy who ran the fastest 60 in the country.

And the guy was struggling with his command. He walks Pearson and we have Crews up with the bases loaded. Again, Jay doing something we don’t do. That’s not our identity.

I would bet the reason Merrifield ran for Beloso and Kling for Jobert is for defensive reasons.

Another thing to think about is by letting the Pearson at bat play out either he gets a hit, we score, he walks we get Crews with the bases loaded, he is out and if we happen to bat again Crews leads off instead of Pearson. Instead we take a longshot gamble there.

Another thought - Wouldn’t it have been better to have Kling get caught in a run down and Merrifield score while they are chasing Kling ?
