I grew up in a 1500-1600 sq ft with a family of 5. My sisters shared a bedroom. That was pretty common at the time.

Almost everyone over 40 did.
Before our current house we lived and started our family in a 1350 square foot house with minimal yard maintenance. It was great. Simple living.
Third kid pushed us into bigger house and the multiplier effect on the budget is a real cost creep beyond the monthly note - house keeper chargers more, yard guy, insurance, utilities, taxes, upkeep. Everything gets more expensive the more house you get.
