Again, same concept as when I see a commercial with an 80 y/o Eskimo woman in bed with her Dinka tribesman husband
A liberal defense attorney who focuses on the plight of those who can't defend themselves (and can't pay well) would attract a diverse group of outsiders. And in 1930's Los Angeles, blacks, Asians, and gays were all right there in the mix. You could have a good show about straight white guys in the '30's, but it wouldn't delve as well into the worlds that this series featured so well.
