Hope all made it out safely
ETA: According to the updated article, there was a fatality. Sincerest thoughts and prayers to the family and coworkers.
Be safe out there, baws

Damn. I was on a boat in Galveston Bay when the BP plant blew up 10-12 years ago.
I saw the fireball and before I could say anything, we got the BOOM. I remember them saying that several company men were killed.

Talk about an incident that changed industry.

I spent over a year in Marathon GBR not that long ago, and I hated it. The vast majority of my career has been spent in Petrochem plants, and I would take a chem plant over a refinery all day, every day.
And the block we were building on was the same block the Isom unit sat on prior to blowing up. The isom unit is the one mentioned above.
RIP to the deceased worker and the others who were burned. I hope they all make a full recovery. They may have been in a shutdown/turnaround and were either bringing whatever unit caught fire down or back on line. Those are the 2 times a unit is most vulnerable to issues.

Surprised Valero across the street hasn’t blown. Massive pile of shite

One of the units blew up at that Valero when I was at BGR. Heard a loud boom, felt a shake, and walked out to see a big ole fire. Couldn’t tell if it was coming from Valero or GBR initially.

Not the case, running unit.

All three were performing routine maintenance on the plant's 75,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) Ultraformer 3 (UU-3) when a pump seal near them failed, causing a fire to erupt,

It's in Texas City, not Galveston, but it is on Galveston Bay, like one of Hosuton's container terminals.
For a second I thought that the last refinery built in the USA (2020) actually in Galveston, had started up and had a fire. The owner fricked up and bought heavy crude instead of the very light Eagle Ford condensate it was designed to refine.
