Wii sports comes with it. You should buy Wii Play and an extra nunchuck.
Wii Play comes with a controller and "9" extra games. Its about the price of a new controller.
Must have games, Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy and I like the Link's crossbow game. I also play Tiger Woods Golf. Don't have 2008, but will get 2009 next year.
Accessories:
Steering wheel for Mario Kart. Other than that, maybe the sports attachments. (tennis racket, baseball bat, golf club)

Little league world series and Mario/Sonic at the Olympics is cool also. I have 2 boys and they love it.

all they do is take up space, considering for most of them you have to place the control inside of it....its just for looks

The Link's Crossbow Training game comes packaged with the Zapper "attachment", which is basically just a plastic housing for one Wiimote and Nunchuck. So if you're looking for it in a store, it's going to be in a longer rectangular box for the Wii Zapper, and not in a regular sized game box. (Same thing goes for Wii Play... it's roughly the same shape as a regular game box, but it's bigger b/c it's got an extra Wiimote in it too).
Another game they might like where they could play at the same time is Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Depending on their ages, if Tiger Woods is too "real" for them but they still like sports games, We Love Golf might be better. Wii Sports, which comes with the system, has a golf game included in it, so you can always see how they like that first before buying or renting one of the others.
