I think he absolutely has a fear of failure because of what happened with his own daughter. Fear, and PTSD as a result (which he definitely has), can compound that response. He couldn't save his daughter. He couldn't save Tess. He has a very real fear of protecting the people he cares about. It makes a lot of sense in that context.

How I see it too, even with Tess..when she was about to end it and was saying to him things like "you never felt the way I wanted", etc. Was him not allowing himself to care about someone else on THAT level. Cause he did care about her, and also understood the world he was in and what he lost to get there.
