1.) The crash of the dvd/blu ray market, the cost to market films going up astronomically.
2.) The shrinking domestic box office and the pivot toward blockbuster centric investments with studios. Original comedies cost decent money and all but the biggest don’t make huge ROI compared to a Jumanji or Jurrasic World or Marvel film.
3.) Streaming… Films like Palm Springs, Bad Trip, Eurovision, Adam Sandler films, Borat 2, Jackass Forever, Confess Fletch, Vacation Friends, Kevin Hart stuff, Weird Al would have been major theatrical releases 10 years ago, and probably one or two would have done pretty well relatively speaking, but today they have deals with streaming and go directly there, or very quickly after a limited release.
The comedies(if you can even call them that) that seem to get funded and widely released are more multi-genre like Deadpool, Jumanji, and Free Guy. Films that are comedies but also action/adventure and fit that “event” movie ROI.
