It’s not the NFL it is the US Congress, and the way it works now is they don”t get released from their commitment. It is deferred until their professional athletic career is over.
Student loans being forgiven early is an actual release from a commitment.

So in theory, Tom Brady would've rejoined the military as a quadragenarian? Collecting that pension as active duty?
