I sold cars at one point in my life and it was a miserable existence.
Never take a trade-in to a dealership. That's when you lose all of your leverage and the voodoo and funny stuff kicks in. Sell it yourself and then just use whatever you make of the sale towards the down payment.
Be careful with the Finance & Insurance manager. He's usually the craftiest and slickest person on the lot.

Terrible advice. For most people, selling a car themselves rather than trading is a major hassle. Could take days, weeks or even months to sell. The prospect of weeding through deadbeats and idiots to find a legitimate buyer that has the funds. Also, you lose tax credit on the trade value, which can be thousands. How about this - do some research on your trade-in value before you go to the dealership and only accept a fair offer for it? Buying a car isn't nearly as difficult as people make it out to be. If you do a little due diligence before going in to make the purchase it can actually be quite easy.
