Might be more difficult to get back to late after a concert.
I’ve been to NY but not for a long time and first time without locals guiding me so relative newby

We went to a concert on the Upper Westside in April, took the subway back, no problems. It wasn't insanely late though. I don't ever feel unsafe in NYC but I have had a place in downtown Nola for 12 years so not much fazes me.
