I started working, professionally, in 2005. I was what all millenials may consider "overworked". I considered it, paying my dues. Now, i'm comfortable in my career. It took me awhile to get here.

Good for you. I’ve been working since the 90s, 2000 for more serious jobs post-graduation.

I’ve had jobs where I’ve had no problem working “over and above” knowing I’d pay my dues and get a solid bump. I’m doing it right now in a career change.

That said, I definitely had other jobs where I was expected to go over and above out of sheer competency (“Hey, Belle can do it. She’ll get it done right”) without the carrot of real upward mobility. This is where a lot of workers languish. It was a good part of the reason I made a major career change in my 30s. And when I started saying no to things without real compensation, management didn’t like it.

So it’s not “reality is” a lot of the time. Add to it a lot of older workers in management positions no longer retiring at 65, it creates a logjam.
