If a backward pass out the end zone results in a safety couldn't Brees have thrown the ball from the line of scrimmage and accomplish the same thing?

I remember an LHSAA playoff game years ago with a similar ending....i want to say st. aug was the team that ended up winning.

the leading team's QB ran toward the endzone to take the intentional safety as time expired and complete an improbably upset of st. aug (they were up by less than a TD at the time). he crossed the goal line as the clock went to 0:00, and celebrated by tossing the ball in the air. unfortunately, he had not taken a knee or run out of the endzone when he tossed the ball.

one of the st. aug defenders had chased him all the way into the endzone and caught the ball out of the air. touchdown and victory st. aug. this would have been during the the mid 90's. anyone else remember this?
