Well, no, your way is crazy "the other way." We should be looking for the replacement for oil and gas now, with the realization that we are going to use it all in some way (energy, manufacturing, what have you). It will eventually run out. Whether in a 100 years or 500 years.

That's plenty of time to solve issues like batteries, rare mineral substitutes, etc. Even if we solved fusion power tomorrow, we would have to figure out how to do that sort of infrastructure.

But, as a reminder to our green friends - we're going to consume ALL the oil, gas and (probably) coal, at least all that can be extracted in a cost-effective way. CO2-phobia isn't going to change that.
