True, but look at it this way. The Detroit Lions have sucked. But when they are on tv if you decided to put the best NFL game on in Michigan and Illinois when the Lions are playing the Bears, fans in Michigan and Illinois would be furious that the Lions-Bears are not on even though they are playing bad football and there is better football being played at the same time. People want to watch their teams and not necessarily the best teams.
Also folks in the SEC underestimate how popular Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and even schools like Michigan State are popular on the East Coast from Boston to Washington. Yes you have Boston College, Syracuse and Maryland, but to a lot of people in New York, New Jersey, Mass. and Penn it's Penn State and Ohio State and Michigan and yes ND.
Once the Ivies gave up on Football and many East Coast schools deemphasized FB ND and the big ten schools took their place.
