I guess by virtue of being active duty I’m not entitled to a “homestead” in Louisiana. I mean it’s not like I chose to leave the state, I was ordered. I bought a home that I lived in and planned to return to…. But that’s fine. I’ll pass the cost on to renters, but it’s just another reason not to return to Louisiana.

That isn't why you got your exemption pulled...it happened because you turning your residence into an investment property, which are not eligible for the exemption. You can piss and moan all you want but it's not because you're in the military.

And next time, don't assume. Call the local assessors office and ask.

ETA:

everything I'm seeing about Texas allows you to keep your exemption for 2 years if you are called away but nothing allowing you to keep it if you rent out the property. Seems like you got away with it in Texas but now you're butthurt because you got caught in Louisiana.

Not pissing and moaning, just pointing out something I didn’t know and others might not either.

It does seem dumb that I cannot purchase a “homestead” solely by virtue of my military status.
