Serious question, how does this scenario play out in reality?

Significant jail time?
Lose right to own a gun?
Mandatory treatment?
Restraining order prohibiting him to enter school property?
Probation?
Released with no follow up?
Forgotten and makes good on threat?

Just trying to get my head around how many of these types of threats are out there and how they are handled? Can anything be done to stop them?
