R-12 was mostly used in appliances and automotive A/C. R-22 was used for A/C in buildings. Both were phased out because of the Montreal protocol which started in the late 80's. These refrigerants worked great for years but some politicians decided they depleted the ozone and we are all going to live longer with the new refrigerants.
