I remember one year LSU was playing mid-week game at Zephyr (maybe Wally Pontiff classic) and late in game Ben McDonald came to pitch relief. I was quite surprised because he was theirs starting ace in weekend games. Not sure who LSU coach was then but I didn’t like that decision. McDonald was really over worked and hurt his career.

I think Nate Bumstead was the pitching coach and told Smoke Bertman that McDonald could handle it so they rode him that game. Never was the same.
