What killed it for me was Carl dying, and then Rick dying. The entire show for me was Rick trying to save his family from a zombie apocalypse. That's how it was set up season 1 and 2. Then they started bringing in a bunch of other people I didn't care about.
Edit: I realize Rick didn't actually die but, as far as this show goes, he did.
