1 is going top 5 this year.
Ok? I went back to the 2019 draft, and the 1st “safety” drafted was #27 in the 1st round, Johnathan Abram from Mississippi State. But he was designated as a SS, which I don’t remember them splitting between SS and FS. For example, the next safety taken that draft was Marquise Blair by the Seahawks in the 2nd round at #47 overall, but he was listed as just a “S.”
Speaking of Seattle, I’d imagine they regret giving up all those picks for Jamal Adams, one of the last safeties picked top 5. And I absolutely LOVE Jamal Adams, but he probably didn’t offer the Jets the on-field value of where they took him nor the Seahawks for how much they gave up for him.
I’m not dogging safeties or saying they provide no value, but I think it’s clear they’re behind QB, OT, OG, WRs, Rush end whether that’s a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB, Will or Mile LBs that can play the run and cover, and CBs in no real particular order after QB. Probably DTs, too. There may be a freak safety every few years who goes top 5, but overall, their value—at least to NFL teams—is trending downward. They don’t seem to affect the game as much as other positions.
