I think the way the conference expansion has gone down so far shows the irrelevance of conference strength when it comes to the business/exposure aspect. The Big 12 clearly has been stronger athletically not just in football but in general than the PAC-10 and especially the Big Ten. Yet those two competitively weaker conferences in athletics are tearing apart a stronger conference.

How has the Big Ten soared past everyone in exposure and revenue in the worst stretch in the conferences athletic history?

Population.

And, I don't see how the Big10's been so horrible lately, but.
Football, not great, but definitely not horrible.
Basketball we always seem to have somebody in the Final Four(Championship game as well every couple years).
Baseball/Softball, we suck.

3 reasons:
BigTen Network- Highest revenued schools in the country are in the Big Ten. $$$$$$$$$
History- Pac 10 and Big Ten both have more history than the Big 12.
The Big 12 was a trendsetter when they came along, but the commissioner (Bebe) couldn't get his head out of UTs lap long enough to see this coming.
