Question about The Lost World

So I’m about 100 pages from finishing The Lost World and if by answering my question would spoil the book, please don’t Spoil it. (I’ve seen the movie though. So I don’t think much could be spoiled)
In the beginning of the book, why is Malcolm continuously acting like this “lost world” may actually exist and it “might” be in THIS region. He knows damn well where it’s located. I get that he signed an NDA in Ingen but it seems like he is almost fooling himself into thinking he may discover an island with dinosaurs on it even though he knows one already exists.
He may think all the dinosaurs were destroyed after the Incident, but when stuff starts washing up on shore, wouldn’t a brilliant mathematical mind make the connection?
